Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
