The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
