Approximately fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say early analysis suggest the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A senior official said the attack made him speechless and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
